German scientists find dyslexia gene

According to PhysOrg.com, German researchers say they've found a genetic component for the learning disability dyslexia, possibly opening new methods of treatment. Not surprisingly, the last problem the researchers are dealing with is how to reverse the gene sequence. ;)

According to Technology Review, startup Avanti Metal, using technology developed at MIT, hopes to commercialize a process that drastically reduces the cost of producing titanium, making more of it available for large, lighter-weight airplanes. I know this seems like a non-news issue, but I think it will change a lot of things. Being as strong as steel but only 60% as dense it will now be used in situations where steel was to heavy and other solutions were cost prohibitive. Can you imagine the kind of bridges that could be built using titanium? It's corrosion-resistant and extremely strong. Imagine the Golden Gate Bridge in stainless steel! How about cars? Fuel economy and no rust! I hope Avanti Metal is able to commercialize the process quickly as I want my titanium Delorian! ;)

MS Karting

Thanks to Dave Bost of Microsoft for an AWESOME evening of karting at Chicago Indoor Racing! It was a well planned evening that was a total blast! A total of 22 Midwest area developers attended for kart racing, dinner, drinks, pool and socializing. Those in attendence from Wisconsin include myself, Travis Feirtag, Scott Isaacs and Gerry Heidenreich. I'm happy to report after three 15 lap qualifiers and a 30 lap feature, three of us finished in the top 5! Other developers/professionals in attendance include: Jon Henning, Gary Kline, Bob Reynolds, Robert Bogue, Lars Bergstrom, Angela Binkowski, Norman Gragasin, Craig Molick, Steven Janis, David Rhodes, David Dugan, Raj Das, Marc Gusmano and Gary Brandt. I know I'm missing some people, but these are all the names I have on my race results!

For those of you that missed it, here's a little on the karts and track. The Bowman Race karts achieve speeds of 30-35 mph and at just an inch off the ground. The track is 800 feet long, featuring a selection of medium and high speed corners. This track includes the Red Bull Chicane and the demanding Jim Beam Bend.

Cingular 8125

I picked up a new Cingular 8125 smartphone last week and I have to say...IT ROCKS! Gizmodo just posted about PDA's dying a slow death due to the explosion in smartphone technology. They used a picture of the 8125 as a good example of a well designed smartphone and I couldn't agree more! The battery life on it is amazing! 200 hours of standby and 5 hours of talk time. Plus whenever I plug into my tablet with USB, it starts charging! It runs Windows Mobile 5.0 which I have found is much improved user experience compared to prior versions. I will post more later, but if you are looking at a new phone, check it out!
